"I’m on probation for ABH actually – I got drunk and attacked a girl. I lost my rag and rammed a bottle in her face".

That’s the story of Kirsten, a bashing booze bird: the modern day phenomenon of young women who drink to get drunk and then get involved in fights in bars and clubs, and out on the streets.

British women are drinking at record levels – and English and Irish women have just been officially declared the world’s biggest binge drinkers, consuming four or more units per session.

At the same time there’s an increase in the number of women involved in anti-social behaviour, and though there are no government figures, the police say they are dealing with more incidents of drunken female aggression.

Nicky Taylor, the nation’s favourite Booze Bird, hits the drinking circuits of Britain again to investigate what’s going on with women on their nights out. How big is the problem and is binge drinking to blame? What is the link between alcohol and aggression?

Nicky enrols on a Door Supervisor course so that she can get a job as a bouncer and find out first-hand what happens in a typical club at the weekend; she joins some young women on a night out in Cardiff – one of the country’s top stag and hen destinations – to witness drunk women letting fly with their fists and their stilettos; and joins a weekend patrol with police in Peterborough to see how they deal with the growing problem of out-of-control booze birds.

During her investigation, Nicky finds out that whereas men’s testosterone level drops when they drink alcohol, women’s rise. She puts this claim to the test by climbing into an East End boxing ring with trainer Ben, first sober then, after downing a bottle wine, completely drunk. Does her testosterone rise and does she become more aggressive?

Nicky ends her journey by looking at how the drinks industry has targeted women drinkers, and tries to track down the government’s response to the British binge-drinking problem – a document called AHRSE…

SHANE MEADOWS’s boots-and-braces drama begins with a rude blast of 1980s nostalgia. Newsreel footage of marching miners, the Falklands conflict, Greenham Common and the storming of the Iranian Embassy are jumbled up with tabloid memories of Roland Rat, the Rubik Cube craze, Space Invaders and scenes from the royal wedding. The whole glorious montage is meticulously cut and pasted over a vintage ska track by Toots and the Maytals.
This is the England that 12-year-old Shaun inherits in 1983. His father has returned from the Falklands in a body bag and his worried mother cannot fill the aching void. Shaun, played by Thomas Turgoose, is bullied at school for wearing flares, and ostracised for being a loser.
The film shapes up like one of those state-of-the-nation parables that made Play for Today such compelling viewing. Shaun’s life is transformed by a gang of local skinheads. Their genial leader, Woody, is amused by the boy’s gloomy wit, and moved by his anguish. Shaun is rapidly adopted by these scary-looking clones. The girls shave off his hair and dress him in Doc Martens and Ben Sherman shirts.
Shaun is touchingly empowered by his new uniform and friends; even his mother is grudgingly impressed. The gang is surprisingly civil if not exactly angelic. They smash up deserted council houses for fun, and get stoned while listening to Jamaican ska.
This rose-tinted account of skinhead culture is torn directly from Meadows’s own experience of growing up on a council estate in Uttoxeter. What makes his film such a magnetic watch is the tragic ease with which his young alter ego is beguiled by the purity of extreme right-wing politics.
Shaun’s blissful relationship with Joe Gilgun’s paternal Woody comes to an abrupt end when an older gang member, Combo (Stephen Graham), arrives fresh from prison with poisonous delusions about immigrants and foreigners. The gang split after a tense and unbearable test of loyalties and Shaun falls into the wrong camp. He laps up Combo’s National Front propaganda, and nearly drowns in the missionary violence. It’s a hair-raising performance by Turgoose.
Few directors have tapped their damaged roots as consistently or brilliantly as Meadows. His ability to mint an original hit from the stingiest budget has made him one of Britain’s finest guerrilla film-makers. His best films — TwentyFourSeven, A Room For Romeo Brass and Dead Man’s Shoes — are black comic homages to his own tormented youth. This is England is the most personal and powerful of these tales.
What makes these raw pictures sing is the Ready Brek glow of optimism that seems to buffer every one of the director’s naive young heroes. Meadows might be a realist but he is also a die-hard sentimentalist. He believes that there is always something or someone worth salvaging, even if it’s only himself.

ENGLISH football fans have rioted in the German city of Cologne ahead of Tottenham Hotspurs' UEFA Cup match against Bayer Leverkusen.A group of about 80 fans smashed up the interior of a pub, causing damage costing about €5000 ($8360) and a car was damaged.One English supporter was hurt in the incident.Police said a group of up to 500 English fans had remained in the centre of Cologne until the early hours of the morning.Visiting fans normally gather in the pubs and bars of Cologne before making the short journey to the industrial city of Leverkusen, where the match was to take place.Police said no trouble was reported in the northern German city of Bremen, where English Premiership champion Chelsea lost 1-0 to Werder Bremen in the Champions League yesterday.

There has been a vicious racist and antisemitic attack in Paris after a football game in which the Israeli team Hapoel Tel Aviv beat Paris-Saint Germain. A black plainclothes police officer came to the defence of a French Jewish Hapoel supporter after he was attacked by PSG fans. The officer shot dead one PSG fan and wounded another.

Here is how the Associated Press reported the incident:

‘They were shouting “filthy Jew” and when they saw our colleague, who comes from the Caribbean, they also yelled, “filthy black, we’re going to get you,” said a police union official, Luc Poignant. Police said the two men who were shot were members of PSG’s far-right fan base that has a notorious violent and racist history. Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy said some PSG fans shouted ‘Death to the Jew’ as they attacked the Hapoel fan, whom officials said was French. The police officer first responded with tear gas, but was knocked to the ground by a blow to the head and kick to the stomach, Sarkozy said. He then drew his gun and opened fire… Paris prosecutor Jean-Claude Marin said the PSG supporters had made Nazi salutes and shouted, ‘Le Pen, president,’ a reference to Jean-Marie Le Pen, leader of the extreme-right National Front party.The National Front later accused the prosecutor of ‘complicity in defamation’ and warned the party would sue anyone who links it with the events.

Five fans were in police custody Friday morning and face possible charges for ‘racist and anti-Semitic insults’, police said. ‘Four young people presumably from the Jewish community were rounded on by a group of supporters of PSG. They decided to separate, and one of them Yanniv Hazout was chased by attackers … The mob grew to some 100 people,’ said state prosecutor Jean-Claude Marin… A hard core of PSG supporters — dubbed the Boulogne Kop — is known for its far-right allegiance, and several have been banned from the club’s matches.

A French football fan has been shot dead by a plain-clothed police officer after a European football match. The officer reportedly fired tear gas, then live ammunition in an effort to disperse a fighting crowd near Paris’ Parc des Princes football stadium. The group of 150 Paris Saint Germain supporters were surrounding a fan of the Israeli team Hapoel Tel Aviv, who had beaten PSG 4-2 in the Uefa Cup. An investigation has been launched into the shooting, police said.
Paris Saint Germain fans have a reputation for violent incidents, with the club disciplined over their behaviour several times in the past. The skirmish broke out by the Parc des Princes in the aftermath of PSG’s defeat. The police officer, who has not been identified, threw tear gas to break up a group of Paris fans surrounding the Israeli.
The officer was then chased towards a McDonald’s restaurant nearby, holding the crowd at bay with his firearm before firing at least two shots, reports said. Police union official Luc Poignant told the AFP news agency that the officer ‘had no choice but to defend himself and protect another person’. There was an atmosphere of high tension among Paris fans immediately after the game, which continued a poor run of form for the team. AFP quoted witnesses describing a climate of ‘extreme confusion’ in the streets. Police reinforcements were sent to the area in an effort to calm the violence in the moments after the Paris fan was shot.
The BBC has excised all references to the anti-black and antisemitic nature of the attack, all references to the far right and all references to the racist pedigree of the PSG fans. Wrongly identifying the Hapoel supporter as an Israeli rather than a French Jew, it gives the impression this was merely a fight between rival supporters of two nations’ football teams.

Ferenc Puskas, the most famous Hungarian gave up the long battle against the Altzheimer disease. He was 79 years old.

"Ferenc Puskas was the chief magician of the so-called Magical Magyars, the great Hungarian team of the 1950s that dominated world football. Puskas was an odd-looking footballer. He was short, stocky, barrel-chested and overweight, could not head the ball and could use only his left foot. But what a left foot. When he came to Wembley in 1953, no one in Britain had seen ball skills like his before. His stunning footballing ablility left England captain Billy Wright tackling air at Wembley and helped Hungary thrash England 6-3, their first defeat on home soil.
Tom Finney, who watched the game from the stands, spoke for everyone when he said: "I came away wondering to myself what we had been doing all these years."
Puskas was known as the 'Galloping Major', a reference to the fact that he played for an army team, Honved. In his first season he scored 50 goals as he won the first of five Hungarian championships and in total scored 357 goals in 354 games.
He made his international debut at the age of 18 and went on to score a phenomenal 83 times in 84 internationals.
Disappointment came when West Germany caused a major upset by defeating Hungary in the 1954 World Cup Final.
The Hungarian uprising against their Soviet masters in 1956 led to the disintegration of the great national side. Puskas was with the rest of his Honved team-mates in Spain when the revolt took place. He defected to the West and within a year had been signed by Real Madrid, then Europe's leading club. Puskas proceeded to form a sensational partnership with Alfredo Di Stefano and they became the heart of an outstanding Real side.
The high point of their achievements was their display in the 1960 European Cup final in front of 135,000 at Hampden Park. In a truly memorable match, Real Madrid defeated Eintracht 7-3. Di Stefano scored a hat-trick, Puskas went one better with four. However, Puskas did not have it all his own way in the European Cup.
In 1962 he scored a hat-trick in the final against Benfica but Real still lost 5-3 to their Portuguese opponents.
There was more disappointment a year later when Puskas, now playing for Spain, failed to inspire his team to success in the World Cup Finals in Chile.
Spain finished bottom of their group and Puskas failed to score in any of his four appearances for his adopted country. But for Real his scoring rate of 512 goals in 528 matches helped the club win five successive league titles as well as that European title.
Puskas left Real in 1966 to concentrate on coaching. He had mediocre success until 1971 when he took the Greek side Panathinaikos to the European Cup Final, where they lost 2-0 to Ajax.
After the Hungarian uprising Puskas had not returned to the country, but he was finally allowed back in 1993 to become caretaker manager of the Hungarian side during the World Cup qualifiers. Puskas, who was admitted to hospital in late 2000 with arteriosclerosis and was later diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, leaves a wife Erzsebet."

A British film crew was in Poland last week making a documentary on why we males love the ‘beautiful game’ and why some Polish males beat people up in defense of the teams they support.The film, which will be a six part TV series to be shown on Bravo cable channel in the UK next year, and hopefully many other channels around the world, looks at the rituals and meanings of football fandom on three continents (and for our North American audience I should add that I am talking about soccer here, not your strange football game that doesn’t seem to involve putting a foot near a ball for 99% of the game). So there will be one 45-minute film each about football fans in Italy, Russia, Argentina, Brazil, Japan and Poland. The series will be called International Football Factory, based on the best selling novel and 2004-feature film Football Factory, which looked at British football hooliganism from a football hooligan’s point of view. That sounds like an obvious thing to do and there have many sociological studies in Britain and elsewhere around the world trying to get into the heads of these people. Why do they do it? What does it mean to them? Unfortunately in Poland there have been very few works by academics or novelists or journalists that do this. Football hooligans are hooligans and that’s as far as they take it. Which isn’t really much use when trying to combat football hooliganism. And combating football hooliganism is crucial in Poland as we have a real problem with this kind of violence here. Many were injured, over two hundred arrested and hundreds of thousands of zlotys worth of damage were caused in May this year as fans from Legia Warsaw rampaged through capital’s the Old Town district. But this was no isolated incident. Six people have been killed in soccer related violence in 2006. So this is a real problem that obviously needs a real and lasting solution. The growth of rival gangs at football matches emerged in Poland during the mid 1970s – a time of great success for the national team - but the communist media ignored it, like they ignored many other social problems. The first time football violence was caught on camera, however, was in 1981 during the TV transmission of a game between Warsaw’s Legia and one of their arch rivals Widzew, a team from Lodz, when fans invaded the pitch. In the 1984-5 season 99 incidents of football related violence were recorded. By the mid 1990’s the police were recording well over 1000 a year. After a relative decline in recent years the hooligans have been particularly active this year and last. So the present government is looking at ways to calm the situation down again and bring some order back to Polish football grounds. But what to do? And this is the problem that the film crew from Britain was particularly keen to explore. English football fans in the nineteen eighties were the most violent in the world. The situation reached crisis point after the Heysel Stadium disaster during the 1985 European Cup Final between Liverpool and Juventus, when the retaining wall of the stadium in Brussels collapsed, killing 39 people, mostly Italian Juventus fans. As a result, English football clubs were banned from all European competitions for five years. It was time for the English Football Association to take some drastic action. The Polish government of course is studying what the British did next. Because whatever they did next worked. Football hooliganism at English football grounds has now simply disappeared. So what are the lessons for Polish football in all this? British football authorities made the stadia in the top divisions all seating. Standing on the terraces in football grounds is a thing of the past. Another thing they did in Britain was install hundreds of CCTV cameras. So if some hooligan starts trouble now they will be picked up immediately by the cops. These recommendations could be put in place in Polish football grounds, but what they need before they do that is money: Polish football grounds are poor, dilapidated places which are intrinsically unsafe. So before Polish football grounds become less hooligan-friendly Polish football needs a massive injection of cash. But where will this come from? And here is the crucial and most difficult part for the Polish authorities if they want to copy the British example. In the early 1990s two things happened in British football. One was the investment that Sky satellite TV, owned by Rupert Murdoch, put into the top league in England. By buying up all the live TV rights to Premiership games, top flight English football clubs got a massive injection of revenue with which they could make the changes to their grounds. Poland is currently seeing an increase in corporate sponsorship of football clubs and a new TV channel which will carry lots of sports coverage, owned by the private company TVN – who also have shares in Legia Warsaw football club - will be an important part in this process. But another vital thing happened in Britain in the 1990s was the ‘middle classization’ of football. After the book by Nick Hornby, Fever Pitch, the middle classes starting going to football matches. The composition of the football crowd changed. Families started returning to the grounds. Can this happen in Poland? Well, I doubt it will happen quickly. Middle class males do not go to football matches here but watch them on the television. Crucially, whereas the middle class now make up the majority in British society, in Poland the middle class is small – maybe less than ten percent. So kicking the hooligan out of Polish football will be difficult and will take time. But you can see the conclusion that the film International Football Factory film comes to – and it has some brilliant footage of the antics of Polish football fans in Krakow - when it is broadcast next year. Oh, and by the way, I’m one of the commentators in the film, so it’s going to be a blockbuster! Naturally

JET passengers were terrified when 65 drunken Russian football fans staged a full-scale riot on a London-bound British Airways (BA) flight on Monday. The louts screamed abuse and brawled among themselves before turning on cabin crew as the chaos spiralled out of control, reported UK's The Mirror.They began fighting just after take-off and were still trading blows three hours later when the plane landed.Dozens of policemen who stormed the plane at Heathrow finally broke up the brawl by wading in with batons - before handcuffing the yobs and marching them away. One woman passenger said: 'It was absolutely the most terrifying experience of my life.'It was like a full-scale riot was happening at the back of the plane and nobody could stop it.'The captain came on and asked for quiet but that didn't help at all. There were people rolling around the aisles and hitting each other.' The yobs, fans of CSKA Moscow who were heading for tonight's Champions League clash with Arsenal, became unruly as soon as the plane was airborne. First, they insisted on smoking and refused to buckle their seat belts. Then, two groups of supporters began screaming insults at each other. As fighting broke out, other passengers were shepherded to the front of the plane. The captain radioed ahead to Heathrow to call for police back up and demand a priority landing slot. When the Boeing 767 carrying 207 passengers finally touched down at 10pm on Monday, police charged on board and arrested six ringleaders.BA is investigating why the fans were allowed on board when they were clearly already drunk.

The Story of Aquascutum

In 1851 John Emary opened a small tailors shop in Mayfair. His reputation for quality craftsmanship and luxury clothing formed the basis for the core values for the company that later was to be renamed Aquascutum. During those early years, John Emary specialised in men's tailoring, but it was his additional interest in coats and outerwear that made the brand famous for what it is today.
With the objective of creating the ideal outerwear garment, John Emary and his colleagues experimented for several years in an attempt to successfully rainproof wool. In 1853 the breakthrough was made. Although more advanced now, early repellent finishes were based on hydrophobic materials such as aluminium soaps and paraffin wax emulsions.
During the Crimean War, Aquascutum were able to provide soldiers with coats made from this new fabric. These coats proved very successful and Aquascutum were approached by the government in 1917 and asked to design a coat suitable for soldiers to use in the trenches. This garment was a valuable aid to trench warfare as it was waterproof, flexible and durable. With its practical features, the coat proved a success during the First and Second World Wars.
During the 1940's the trench coat was made available to the general public. It was at this point that Aquascutum won fashion acclaim for its Trench Coats. The look was soon an intrinsic part of the Hollywood movie wardrobe with stars such as Humphrey Bogart and Audrey Hepburn sporting Aquascutum Trench Coats.
As well as having a reputation for classic tailoring and quality outerwear, the famous Aquascutum Club Check is also internationally recognised. Originally used as a lining for coats in the 1970's, the Club Check has gradually been incorporated into the Aquascutum Collections and is now an integral part of Aquascutum's branding.
Aquascutum owes much of its success to the support offered by the Royal Family. In 1897, HRH The Prince of Wales (later King Edward II) granted Aquascutum its first Royal Warrant. This was followed by an award in 1911 from King George V, and another in 1920 by HRH Prince of Wales (later the Duke of Windsor). The Royal Warrant we currently hold was awarded to us in 1949 by The Late Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.

Evisu was formally born in Osaka, Japan in 1991 although the research and planning necessary to reproduce the perfect pair of vintage jeans had been going on for several years prior to this.The founder, and still the owner, of Evisu is Hidehiko Yamane. Yamane-san was trained as a tailor but his love for vintage jeans and his disappointment with the mass-produced modern versions led him firstly, to the vintage clothing import business and then, revolutionarily, to start putting together the elements required reproducing vintage-style jeans. This required the gathering together of all the various bits of machinery, none of which had been produced for at least 40 years, which are required to make authentic vintage jeans.
The initial production line allowed about 14 pairs of jeans a day to be produced and each of them was lovingly hand-painted with the now famous seagull logo by Yamane-san himself. Evisu (also written as Evis or Ebisu) is the name of the Japanese Buddhist god of money who is usually portrayed with a fish and fishing rod. This name was selected for the new venture as money and fishing are two of Yamane-san's five favourite things (the others being beer, women and golf - in no particular order).Although initially Evisu was more a labour of love than a commercial venture, Evisu jeans captured the imagination of the detail-obsessed, Japanese fashion crowd, spurring a revival of interest in vintage denim which has now spread around the world. In the early nineties Yamane-san introduced a tailoring line, followed by a fishing range and a golf range. In 1999 he introduced a ladies fashion line called Evisu Donna to complete the development of Evisu as a full-fashion range going far beyond a jeans brand. Evisu now has 25 shops in Japan. In 1994 Yamane-san was visited by Peter Caplowe who became an immediate convert to the Evisu ethos. They formed a partnership to develop Evisu outside Japan that now spans the globe, selling in 400 of the world's best boutiques and department stores. Despite this phenomenal growth Evisu still remains true to its artisan roots with a fanatical devotion to quality and authenticity while maintaining those two other vital ingredients of the Evisu magic potion - humor and irreverence.

Outgoing Cardiff City chairman Sam Hammam has claimed that part of his legacy will be how he tackled the club's hooligan problem head-on.
He told BBC Wales that his "you've got to meet them to beat them" approach had led to self-policing among fans.
"When you reach out to them, talk to them about what you're trying to achieve you discover how positive they are," he said.
But one former South Wales police chief said other factors had contributed.
Mr Hammam, who was succeeded by Peter Ridsdale as chairman last week, said the club had come on in "leaps and bounds" on the hooligan issue.
"They're no longer involved, they don't come along to games to fight," he said.
His policy of mixing with troublemakers in an attempt to tackle the problem was greeted with criticism or scepticism from some quarters.
Mr Hammam said: "I started a campaign. You've got to 'meet them to beat them.'
"A lot of people who are hooligans are very nice, genuine people at heart and love their club."

Workers at the threatened Burberry factory in south Wales are holding a demonstration against its closure at the Welsh assembly.
The Rhondda-based factory, which employs 309 people, is in consultation about closing at the end of the year and moving production abroad.
Campaigners have held previously held demonstrations at the factory.
Earlier this month, there were protests outside the designer's store in London about the closure.
Thursday's lunchtime demonstration was being addressed by Rhondda politicians Chris Bryant MP and Leighton Andrews AM.
A small group of workers were taking the protest inside the assembly's Senedd building in Cardiff Bay.
Mervyn Burnett, senior organiser for the GMB union, said: "This is the next step in the GMB campaign to gather support from elected representatives and others to maintain Burberry production in south Wales".
The factory in Treorchy makes polo shirts and production will go where costs are lower, possibly to Asia or South America.
Burberry has said the factory is no longer "commercially viable", but it would not abandon the UK.
The union is asking the company to consider bringing new work to the Rhondda.
It says Burberry could make raincoats in Wales rather than increasing the amount of rainwear it makes in Castleford, West Yorkshire.
If the company was to make the extra 45,000 coats they plan to in Rhondda instead, the GMB says the company could save 220 of the 300 threatened jobs.
The firm would need to move to a smaller site than its Treorchy base, but the union believes one could be found in the area, possibly with help from the assembly government.
A Burberry spokeswoman said the company would look at all options, as the intention to close was "only a proposition".
Leighton Andrews AM has urged south Wales-born movie star Ioan Gruffudd, who promotes Burberry, to back the campaign to keep the factory open.

BUDAPEST, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Hungarian fans on Friday protested against the country's bid to host the European Championships and called for their football federation to put its house in order.Hungary are jointly bidding with Croatia to host Euro 2012 and the protest, drawing about 300 fans from various clubs, took place in front of a building hosting a meeting with officials from European soccer's governing body UEFA.The fans, drawn from hard-core 'ultra' groups, chanted "We don't need Euro 2012" and shouted insults at football federation officials.The organisers handed over a statement to UEFA and local officials criticising the management of the Hungarian Football Federation and the treatment of fans."The moral level of Hungarian football is unacceptable. The Hungarian stadiums, as well as everything else connected with the game, are rotten," said the statement read out to the demonstrators."At the current stage, we, the active fans of the major Hungarian clubs, cannot support the Hungarian bid for Euro 2012," the statement added promising further protests.The fans' protests come at the end of two weeks of political demonstrations in the capital in which football hooligans were accused of playing a role in violence.The Hungarian national team, once among the greats of the game in the 1950s, have not qualified for a major international tournament since 1986.Ukraine and Poland are also jointly bidding for Euro 2012 and face competition from Italy.

Last night around 400 peoples - a small part of the demonstarating lot- attacked and took over the charge over the hungarian national TV. Hugh clashes between the mounted police forces and lads. Joined groups of football hooligans of the teams of the capital showed their true faces to the public... Things still going on not just in Budapest, every bigger towns in the country.

Shilton was arrested for drink-driving after being found at 5am in a country lane with a woman called Tina in his car. When Tina's husband Colin arrived he said the pair were partially clothed. Shilton hurriedly drove away and crashed into a lamppost. He admitted 'taking a lady for a meal' and was fined £350 and banned from driving for 15 months. He then had to endure countless terrace chants of 'Shilton, Shilton, where's your wife?'

While on Everton's 1991 pre-season tour of Spain, Beagrie went on a boozy night out following a game with Real Sociedad. In the early hours he flagged down a Spanish motorcyclist who gave him a lift home. Upon arriving at his hotel he couldn't wake the night porter, so Beagrie commandeered the bemused Spaniard's bike, rode it up the hotel steps and straight through a plate glass window. Only it was the wrong hotel. Beagrie required 50 stitches.
4 Don Hutchison (1996)

While on holiday in Ayia Napa in 1994, an inebriated Hutchison hid his wedding tackle behind a Budweiser label. When a bystander's snaps appeared in the tabloids, his manager at Liverpool Roy Evans declared: 'If Hutchison is flashing his **** again that's out of order.' Hutchison had form. A year earlier he had spotted female students videoing their graduation celebrations in a wine bar, unzipped his flies and announced, 'Zoom in on this!' After the Ayia Napa incident he was fined £5,000, dropped, transfer-listed - and eventually shipped off to West Ham (where he was known to fans and team-mates as 'Budweiser').

In terms of attracting women, Best even put Frank Worthington in the shade. His most notorious moment came when he was caught in flagrante delicto by his manager Wilf McGuinness at the team's hotel on the afternoon of Man Utd's FA Cup semi-final against Leeds in 1970. Best had chatted up the woman on the hotel's stairs. McGuinness wanted to send him home, and only the intervention of Sir Matt Busby enabled Best to play. 'He had an absolute nightmare,' McGuinness recalled. 'We drew 0-0 again, and George had the chance to win it, but fell over the ball in front of goal.'

Not content with his affair with Patsy Kensit (an affair that he brought to an end, which made all the papers) it then transpired he didn't have one mistress but two. The second was 28-year-old air hostess Donna Gilbin, who didn't know about Patsy and was sure Patsy didn't know about her. 'He was a wonderful lover and he made me melt,' Donna told the People. 'But now I know that he's just a liar and a hypocrite. My world fell apart when the bombshell dropped.'

As the Torquay team attempted to bond before the 1991 play-offs, a session of the drinking game 'buzz' was organised. When Tynan tried to break up an argument between his captain Wes Saunders and player-coach Russell Musker, Saunders punched Tynan, leaving him with a cut eye. The players then went to bed, but at 2am Tynan went to Saunders's room to seek vengeance and according to chairman Mike Bateson, 'he picked up the nearest thing handy, which was a kettle, and hit Wes with it'.

FOOTBALL fans spend nearly £100,000 following their team over the course of a lifetime.
According to Virgin Money, supporters who buy season tickets and follow their club around Europe fork out £97,500.
Virgin's Football Fans Inflation Index found that fans splash out £20,000 each on season tickets, with a further £11,600 going on away games and cup matches during their lifetime.
A further £40,000 goes on travel costs, with the rest being spent on club merchandise and match-day food and drink.
But, while hardcore fans spend an average of £1,875 a season, those who stay close to home to support their team cut their bill to £1,310 a season - or £68,120 over the course of a lifetime.
And supporters who prefer to sign up to satellite television and follow their club from the comfort of their armchair slash costs further - to £283 a season or £14,716 during their lifetime.
Virgin Money spokesman Scott Mowbray said: "Football fans live from game to game so will be surprised to hear how much they spend over a lifetime.
"The prospect of forking out as much as £100,000 just to follow your team is particularly daunting for young people who are desperate to find the money but may be struggling with debts.
"This year's Premiership saw a drop in attendances, which could be a symptom of the top tier pricing its fans out of the grounds."
The Football Supporters' Federation says British ticket prices at around £30 are way ahead of other European countries with tickets starting at between £7 and £8 in Germany and between £10 and £12 in Italy and Spain.

Football thugs to be banned from city centre by new law

HARDCORE football hooligans in Edinburgh face being banned from stadiums, pubs and even the whole of the city centre under tough new laws.
Officers are drawing up a hitlist of around 20 of the Capital's worst troublemakers to target with the new Football Banning Orders, which come into force on Friday. Lothian and Borders officers are set to use the new powers to prevent notorious "casuals" in the Capital from entering certain pubs in the city by creating exclusion zones on match days. Details of the banning orders, similar to the ones used to curb football violence in England, were being announced today by Justice Minister Cathy Jamieson as part of a Scottish Executive drive to target sectarianism and hooliganism. As well as being banned from football grounds, pubs, and areas of the city, offenders can be forced to report to police stations while matches are being played. And the hooligans could also be made to surrender their passports during European or international fixtures. When the new powers come into effect on Friday - in time for Hearts' home fixture against St Mirren and Hibs' away match at Dundee United - people who hurl sectarian abuse at matches or incite violence outside ground could be hit with the orders. Superintendent Terry Powell, football match commander for Lothian and Borders, said that the orders would be used to send out a hard-line message to hooligans and bigots on both sides of the Capital's football divide. He said: "There is a hardcore group of about 20 individuals that we would currently look at compiling evidence against in order to justify a banning order. "

The orders will give us more strength to keep those kind of football casuals away from matches and potential flashpoints across the city. "That could involve being banned from all stadiums and having to report to a police station during a match day. "

We can also set up personal exclusion zones for people so they cannot go within a certain distance of the stadium or even into a particular pub where we expect them to cause trouble.
"We're not expecting to dish these out to first-time offenders or people who just get ejected from the stadium for a minor offence."
But we can make summary applications to the sheriff court to impose a banning order.
"We hope that will be enough to deter certain football fans who would consider engaging in hooliganism or bigotry at games." A Hearts spokeswoman said: "Heart of Midlothian Football Club is aware of the impending legislation and will fully co-operate with the police in respect of any banning orders they seek to impose."
Sheila Sowersby, bar manager at Robertsons Bar on Gorgie Road, added: "We don't ever seem to have any bother here but it's good to know that the police are about and it's good that some of the worst fans won't be allowed in the area on matchdays."

Due to the constructions in our stadium we had to play this game at Csepel Stadium, which located on an island of the Danube. Our boys played badly - fortunetely we managed to save at least 1 point. Yesterday we had our first game of the new season. We lost against Gyor away. Played in the smaller stadium of the city that was the first time that we visited this stadium on a league game. We had a nice turnout eventhough the weather wasn`t really nice. Because of the rain the game started 45 minutes later as it was scheduled. The guys on the pitch rather played waterpolo than footy and unfortunetely the home team was better in this sport so thez won the game. Our new owner was on the spot as well, he went to the capo once to ask him to stop starting racist and antisemitist songs. What this guy thinks, he bought the club and he has now the right to decide what we`ll singing about? Fuck that.

THE WEKERLE -TELEP

Special architectural work can be found in the business-quarter that lys on the northern part of the 19th district. This land, which was designed with geometric precision, can easily be found on a map: it is square-shaped and the main streets set out from a circus located in the middle and is intersected by-streets periodically. The history of Wekerle-telep is quite unique. By the end of the 19th century the quickly industrialized Budapest was struggling against a labour shortage, at the same time in this urbanized city there wasn’t enough space suitable for accomodating twenty thousand people. The cooperation of Kispest held to be a neighbour settlement raised up and the building up of the field between the two towns was planned. The construction involving numerous architects began in 1909 and according to the plans the most modern methods of that period were used. Unfortunately World War I considerably hindered the construction and several institutes and infrastructural investments (casinos, hospitals, street cars, etc.) were delayed. Finally, the construction was finished in 1930. The one and two story houses were built in almost the same >The main part was drawn up by Károly Kós, who played an important role in the birth of Wekerle Square and it was named after him. Today, this part of the city is a popular residential area, eventhough it isn’t a tourist attraction, it’s worth walking through.
